The series “has extremely unacceptable scenes that have hurt the feelings of a certain religion,” Narottam Mishra, interior minister of Madhya Pradesh in central India, said on Twitter.
“I have asked the police to analyze this content to determine what actions can be taken in court against the producer-director of the series for hurting religious feelings,” he added.
Gaurav Tiwari, a youth wing leader of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in power in India and Madhya Pradesh, filed a separate complaint against Netflix and warned of possible street protests by Hindus. the series will not be removed from the platform.
A spokesperson for Netflix India declined to comment on the police report.
Social media commentators claim that the area of creative freedom is increasingly limited in India, especially when it comes to the representation of Hindu-Muslim relations. Many Indians have called for a boycott of Netflix on Twitter, which sees India as one of the most promising markets in the world, but where its series have faced a number of legal issues.
