A new study from Tel Aviv University (TAU) and Shamir Medical Center in Israel shows that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) among healthy adults can stop the aging of blood cells and reverse the aging process.
From a biological standpoint, adult blood cells also rejuvenate as treatments progress, the researchers say.
They claim to have discovered a unique protocol for oxygen treatments in a hyperbaric chamber, which can reverse two of the main processes associated with aging and disease: the shortening of telomeres (protective regions at both ends of each chromosome) and the accumulation of old cells in the body. .
The study focused on immune cells containing DNA obtained from the subjects’ blood, finding a telomere elongation of 38% and a decrease of 37% in the presence of aged cells.
“Our team has been involved in hyperbaric research and treatment for many years – treatments based on protocols of exposure to high pressure oxygen at different concentrations within a hyperbaric chamber,” said Professor Shair Efrati of Sackler University. of Medicine and director of the hyperbaric medicine department at Shamir Medical Center.

The researchers exposed 35 healthy individuals over the age of 64 to a series of 60 hyperbaric sessions over 90 days.
Blood samples were taken from each participant before the start of treatment, during treatment, and at a time after the end of the sessions.
The researchers then analyzed the various immune cells in the blood and compared the results.
The results indicated that the treatment succeeded in reversing the aging process in two main aspects: telomeres at the ends of chromosomes lengthened by 20-38% instead of shortening, and the percentage of aging cells decreased between 11 and 37%, depending on the type of cell.
