On Monday, Hungary and Poland vetoed the multi-year budget and the European lending capacity to finance the economic recovery plan, to oppose the new mechanism that conditions the granting of European funds to respect for the rule of law (independence of the judiciary , respect for fundamental rights, independence of the press, etc.).

The ruling party in Poland is not a member of the EPP.

In early April, 13 of the 82 EPP member parties called for the exclusion of FIDESZ, the party of Viktor Orban, in a letter to EPP President Donald Tusk.

But none of the major political parties, starting with the CDU in Germany and the People’s Party in Spain, joined.

Donald Tusk intends to re-launch the exclusion procedure requested by the 13 parties.

This would be the third time such a request was discussed. Previous attempts have failed because the FIDESZ’s EPP allies, particularly the CDU, refused to vote for exclusion.

However, the FIDESZ has been suspended indefinitely since March 2019 by the EPP.
