How do the elections work?
The winner of the elections is determined through a system called the constituency. Each of the 50 states, plus Washington DC, receives a number of constituency votes, for a total of 538 votes. More populous states get more votes in constituencies than smaller ones.
A candidate must win 270 constituency votes (50% plus one) to win the election.
In every state but two – Maine and Nebraska – the candidate who gets the most votes wins all the votes in the state constituency.
Due to these rules, a candidate can win elections without getting the most votes nationwide. This happened in the last election, in which Donald Trump won the majority of the electoral college votes, even as more people voted for Hillary Clinton in the United States.
How are the results reported?
The election results on this page are reported by the Associated Press (AP). AP “calls” the winner in a state when it determines that the final candidate has not traveled to victory. This can happen before 100% of the votes in a state have been counted.
Estimates for the total vote in each state are also provided by AP. The numbers update on election night as more data on turnout becomes available.
