For years Peter Sutcliffe († 74) has terrorized Britain. As the “Yorkshire Ripper” he killed a total of 13 women in the 1970s and brutally executed them. Now the serial killer is dead of Covid-19.
On Friday night Sutcliffe took his last breath at University Hospital in North Durham, England. Pulmonary failure – due to a coronavirus infection. No one woke up near his bed when he died, no one prayed for his survival.
A few days ago he was hospitalized for heart problems. Then his condition improved and he was sent back to prison. Until he ended up in the clinic short of breath. And he died.
He believed in a place in heaven
More recently, he had refused necessary life support measures. The serial killer who converted to Jehovah’s Witnesses firmly believed in going to heaven, his relatives tell the Daily Mail.
The Yorkshire Ripper committed his first known murder in 1975: He hit Wilma McCann, 28, with a hammer, then stabbed 15 times. In the following years he committed another twelve murders, mostly with hammer and knife. Some of his victims were prostitutes.
Then in 1977 he was targeted by the police. But nothing was possible for him to prove. Only four years later the investigators managed to capture him – by accident: he had driven a car with a false license plate and returned under control. A prostitute was with him and the police found a knife, hammer and rope in the car. The handcuffs snapped.
“Maybe I can close now”
In a two-day interrogation, Sutcliffe finally confessed to the murders that ravaged Britain. During the interrogation, people gathered in front of the police building, carrying signs with the message “Hang him!” high.
Marcella Claxton is one of seven women from Sutcliffe who were injured but not killed. Back then, the doctors took 50 stitches to save her. “I’m glad he’s dead,” Claxton says. “I think about what he did to me every day. The news of his death brings back unbearable memories. But maybe I can finish it now. “(hah)
