Biden just needs to win in three states in which he leads
Democratic candidate Joe Biden is in a better position than Donald Trump to be elected president of the United States.
With the decision to focus on a handful of states, Biden has 238 electoral votes to Trump’s 213. The magic number is 270.
Former Vice President Barack Obama received a new boost with the conquest of Arizona, the first state to change since 2016, garnering another 11 electoral votes.
The spotlight is now on Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, but also North Carolina, Georgia and Nevada. If Biden wins in any two of these four states – Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia – he will be elected.
And Biden leads the vote count in Michigan, with 12,000 more votes than Trump, when roughly 90% of the votes are examined. In Wisconsin, the Democrat leads with about 20,000 votes, with 97% of the results already counted.
Biden also has a slight lead in Nevada, with 7,500 more votes than the current White House tenant, when 86% of the vote was counted.
If he wins in these three states, Biden will add a total of 270 votes to the constituency, the minimum necessary to be elected. If he wins the electoral vote still under discussion in Maine, the victory will be obtained with 271.
In this way, the Democratic candidate could even lose to Pennsylvania, where Trump leads by 616,000 votes but still has to count a large number of ballots.
In North Carolina, Trump’s lead is less than 80,000 votes when about 4% of the votes remain to be counted. In Georgia, the US president leads by 104 thousand votes with 96% of the results obtained.
The uncertainty, however, will drag on, as votes in Wisconsin and Michigan will only be counted in full, at best, by the end of today. In Nevada, the counting of votes cast in person will not be resumed until Thursday.
Trump, for his part, will win re-election if he wins at least four of these states: Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. All of these states were won by Trump in 2016.
Draw possible
There is still the scenario, albeit increasingly unlikely, that the elections will be decided by a single vote or even a tie.
Maine distributes the four electoral votes – with two for the winner in the state and one for each of the congressional districts, one of which has not yet been counted.
If Trump wins that Maine vote and loses Wisconsin and North Carolina, both candidates will add 269 electoral votes. In this scenario, Trump is expected to win the casting vote in the House of Representatives, as each state has only one vote.
