A Winston Churchill painting of his favorite whiskey was auctioned off in London on Tuesday for more than a million euros. The still life of the former British Prime Minister has sparked a real online auction battle and with a price of 1.1 million euros has repeatedly exceeded the expectations of the auction house Sotheby’s. The organizers expected revenues of around 280,000 euros.
Churchill ruled Britain during World War II and was an avid amateur painter. The oil painting “Jug with Bottles” from the 1930s shows a bottle of “Johnnie Walker Black Label” whiskey alongside a bottle of brandy with a cup and glasses. The alcoholic ensemble reflects Churchill’s fondness for whiskey, according to Sotheby’s.
In his youth, Churchill, born in 1874, is said to have initially disliked the taste of whiskey. It is said that he got used to it during his time in the army. The rumors of Churchill’s supposedly exorbitant alcohol consumption are legendary. Champagne or wine with dinner, port wine and brandy with the cigar, several whiskey or cognac drinks in between: according to the descriptions, the politician, writer and artist must have been an alcoholic. It is not proven.
The artistic quality of Churchill’s amateur paintings is controversial. A painting of the former Prime Minister resembling the one now up for auction was once described by the New York Times as “truly horrifying”. However, his works have garnered high prices in previous auctions.
