Although the number of deaths is on the rise, with 67,000 new deaths registered in a single week, the WHO believes that the number of infected is to stabilize.
The UN health agency also said on Wednesday that although there has been a “downward trend” in the number of cases in Europe, the continent is still the one with the highest percentage of new infections and deaths in the world.
Last week, second WHO, the number of new cases registered in Europe decreased by around 6% after a 10% decline in the previous week, suggesting that restrictions imposed across the continent are actually slowing down the transmission.
However, the region is responsible for around half of new deaths globally.
