WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus held a meeting with WHO epidemic experts via video conference at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ghebreyesus said the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world was reported last week.
Noting that there is an alarming increase in the number of cases and hospitalizations in many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared information that intensive care units are rapidly filling, especially in Europe and North America.
Stressing that everyone should do their best to protect healthcare workers, Ghebreyesus said the best way to do this is to take all personal precautions to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who called on all people to make sacrifices during the epidemic, said: “Nobody wants the so-called quarantine (curfew) anymore. But if we want to avoid it, we should all do our part.”

Mike Ryan, WHO Emergency Situations Program Director, said last week, 46% of all Covid-19 cases worldwide and 1 in 3 deaths were reported in the European region.
Ryan said:
“So there is no doubt that the European region is now the epicenter of the disease. We have to anticipate this virus and then keep up with the virus. Maria Van Kerkhove, leader of the WHO fight against Covid-19, said: “We are still confident that countries do not have to enter these so-called national quarantines”, on a question about the growing number of cases and deaths in Europe.
