“We continue to receive encouraging news about vaccines and remain cautiously optimistic that new tools will begin to arrive in the coming months,” said Ghebreyesus, following the announcement that the coronavirus vaccine from US pharmaceutical company Moderna has efficacy of almost 95%.

“But now is not the time to be complacent”, warned the head of this UN agency, who already this morning he said vaccines will not be enough to defeat the pandemic.

Ghebreyesus also expressed “great concern about the increase in the number of cases in some countries”, referring mainly to Europe and America, where “health workers and health systems are in danger” due to COVID-19 infections.

“The time has come to invest in systems that will prevent new waves of viruses,” he added.

The WHO director-general released these statements on the day of his return to this institution’s headquarters in Geneva, after spending 15 days in solitary confinement after being in contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19.
