(CNN) – The Kremlin said on Monday that Russia will only accept the US election results as official after all requests are completed and Donald Trump will admit it.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked to clarify why Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet offered his congratulations to US President-elect Joe Biden.
Peskov explained that in 2016 experts had predicted Hillary Clinton’s victory, incorrect predictions.
“The elected president must be announced, the incumbent president must acknowledge the election results and all requests must be closed. Only then will the results be officially finalized. Of course this hasn’t happened yet, ”Peskov said.
Putin said on Sunday he was ready to work with any American leader and would congratulate anyone who has been declared the winner after all legal issues related to the election have been resolved, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
In an interview with Russia 1 TV channel, Putin said he was not worried that a delay in sending congratulations would worsen relations between Moscow and Washington, as they are already bad.
“You can’t ruin a flawed relationship, it’s already ruined,” Putin said.
“We have respectful relations with everyone: both current President Trump and the candidate for this position, Mr. Biden. Therefore, we have no problem here, “Putin added.
