(CNN) – In exactly seven weeks, Donald Trump will no longer be president. Likewise, the eldest daughter, Ivanka, will be out of work.
You see, Ivanka, along with her husband, Jared Kushner, have spent the past four years alongside their father in Washington, emerging as prominent actors behind the scenes (and sometimes in front of) the, um, stormy Trump administration.
Even if Ivanka no longer works in the White House, she won’t disappear. As Jacqueline Alemany of the Washington Post points out in an excellent story about the president’s daughter:
“It is unclear where exactly Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, who like Ivanka is a senior White House adviser, will physically land after leaving Washington in January, as planned …
“… But the couple’s old friends, colleagues and co-workers believe that wherever they live, the first daughter will contemplate how to maximize her political capital, whether that means a real candidacy or a more tenuous influence in Republican circles in a world where the President Trump still has enormous political influence.
If you ask Donald Trump, his daughter can be chosen for anything. In 2016 he reportedly considered appointing her as his vice president (!) And while he was campaigning for a second term this year, he seemed to have pushed her into his place.
“I also want to see the first female president, but I don’t want to see the first female president take office like she does. [Kamala Harris] I would, “Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire in late August.” Everyone says, ‘We want Ivanka!’ I don’t blame them. “
The problem with all of this, of course, is Trump himself. He looks ready, willing and able to run for president again in 2024, which would mean Ivanka won’t be able to run for president that year either.
And if you can’t do that, your options are relatively limited.
He can’t go back to New York and, let’s say, run for mayor. (He would probably lose embarrassingly.)
If Ivanka and her family end up moving into her father’s club in Bedminster, NJ, as has been widely speculated, she could theoretically run for the 7th Congressional District, a seat currently held by Democratic Representative Tom Malinowski.
But would Ivanka consider the House of Representatives as a small dish? (Yes, yes, I would.)
All things considered, it seems likely that Ivanka will stand in New Jersey and await her time, lending her name and star power to Republican fundraising efforts and being kind to the Republican establishment (if any). and collect the tokens.
The point: while there is no obvious political office for which Ivanka can apply right now, that doesn’t mean she will disappear from the national political radar. If you think so, you don’t know Ivanka.
