"I had no choice but to write a few words about what is happening in the case of little Julen." Thus began a letter sent by a policeman from the Guardia Civil to the "Diario Sur", a regional newspaper of Malaga, in Spain.
Julen, a two-year-old boy, fell into a 110-meter deep well on the afternoon of January 13 in Totalán, in the province of Malaga. Since then, dozens of people, including police, firefighters, psychologists, engineers and miners try to create a plan to save the child.
Between the noise of the cars and the shift change, a police officer of the Guardia Civil, who "is giving the best version of himself in Totalán", decided to write, on paper and pen, a letter that reached the media . By saying what happens in his soul, the agent shares feelings and asks Spain to feel his breath, just as the operators feel the breath of the whole country.

"Testimony of a civil guard who works in Totalán
I had no choice but to write a few words about what is happening in the case of Julen. Far from the chambers, politicians and official communications, it is my intention to testify to the human side of what is happening because it is going through many limits.
Let's say that, for reasons of closeness, I was one of those who left the family with the dish on the table that fateful Sunday 13. I remember that in the phone call I made to my wife shortly after he said: "Do not wait for lunch, it lasts a long time" .
And it is from that moment that the events that motivated this letter began to happen.
As a civil guard and as a person, I recognize that my heart was shaking when it came to the family's first minutes of despair, but I also felt shocked to listen to the radio broadcast and how the station was coordinating the mobilization notice with GEAS [Grupo Especial de Atividades Subacuáticas], Montana [militares de montanha e operações especiais], the judicial police, SEPRONA [serviço de proteção da natureza]etc.
I have little time as a professional, but I have the right to feel small in the execution of the elite units of the Guardia Civil.
Seeing them work, coordinated with the experience of firefighters, career physicists, engineers, etc., It was an example of professionalism.
It was incredible how, among all, they sought solutions and made "inventions" to reach Julen in the safest possible conditions.
I will not forget the the chills and palpitations of my heart when I saw the screen of the camera that would meet him, attempt after trial, because my desire was to see Julen, I knew I would cry if it happened, and on the other side, I was not sure if I wanted him to appear under those circumstances or that he had the possibility that he was not not even there and a new path of hope open.
These were difficult times, excessive work and tension, not yet a relief, and for two days I have observed some of them firefighters and policemen sleeping in cold vehicles so that the head can continue to work.
I will not forget the words that a comrade told me after three days of uninterrupted work in the well: "We will not stop here until we release it, it is clear".
Unfortunately, all this effort did not work, we ended up taking an engineering operation to save it, with everything involved and with the discomfort that the little one had been there for more than 48 hours.
I have also seen the admirable progression of parents' emotions, from utter desperation to calm and quiet that become an example for those who look them in the eye.
We have worked hard for over a week, and what to deny, we have a broken body, but with an intact heart and willingness to save.
That said, Spain can rest assured that its firefighters, GREA 112, Civil Defense, civilian volunteers, psychologists and, of course, the Civil Guard will NEVER STOP UNTIL JULY BACK TO HIS PARENTS, I can guarantee this.
And, of course, a special thanks to all those who, unselfishly, become a fundamental part of the relief offering food, drinks and others, which keep us lively, active and willing to continue working.
From Totalán we hear the breath of all Spain, I assure you, feel our and always with us.
Greeting. A guard like any other who is giving his best version in Totalan. Here we go … ".
