Virus imported by returnees
In short, an increasing number are linked to a migratory background
Much of the new infections during the summer in Austria can be traced back to travelers returning from the Balkans. Chancellor Kurz cites the migratory context as the reason. For his less sensitive choice of words he has received criticism from his coalition partner.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz reiterated his much-criticized statement that the corona virus was “carried” by people with a migrant background over the summer through trips abroad. The Alpine republic “imported” a third of the number of infections during the summer through people returning from the Balkans, Kurz told the “Bild” newspaper. “This is simply a fact, not the assignment of blame, but simply reality,” continued Kurz.
The Austrian government announced on Wednesday a ten-day quarantine obligation for all travelers from crown risk areas around Christmas and New Year. This is true for virtually all neighboring countries and in particular the Balkans, he said.
The criticism of Kurz’s choice of words came not only from the opposition and on social media. The communication of the travel restrictions was “one-sided and characterized by a lack of sensitivity,” said Greens boss and coalition partner Werner Kogler. The statements would have hurt many people. “And I think in particular of the many women and men who have worked hard with us for many months in nursing homes, hospitals – including intensive care units – and other important areas,” Kogler said.
Statistics from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (age) indicate that there have been two summer weeks in which a third of corona cases can be attributed to returnees from the Balkans. However, the numbers would say nothing about the nationality of the infected. Due to the government travel warning for Croatia, many holidaymakers, Austrians and migrants, returned to the Alpine republic during this time.
