A German frigate participating in a European Union naval mission carried out a search on Monday morning, November 23, in the eastern Mediterranean, on a Turkish ship carrying humanitarian supplies to Libya.

The German military got off the helicopter aboard the Turkish ship, suspected of violating the arms embargo imposed on Libya.

In what security sources have called “illegal behavior”, the ROSELINE-A cargo ship was intercepted by the German ship southwest of the Peloponnese to conduct an early morning search of the cargo. As a result of the inspection, only humanitarian materials, food and paints were discovered, reports the Turkish news agency Anadolu, according to DefenseRomania.ro.

The German frigate was involved in Operation Irini, a European mission launched earlier this year to impose a UN arms embargo on Libya, although it has been accused of prejudice to forces commanded by Khalifa Haftar and the his allies.

The search aboard the ship would have violated international law, which requires a party to obtain the consent of the state under whose flag the ship is registered before carrying out the inspection, under the law of the sea.

Apparently in violation of this principle, the soldiers of the German ship Hamburg descended on ROSELINE-A by abseiling from a helicopter. The crew was surprised by the development as in the films, the Turkish press also reports.

After blocking the ROSELINE-A ship’s route at Misrates harbor for hours, the troops left the ship when they realized the ship was carrying only humanitarian supplies, food and paint. During the search, all of the ship’s containers were opened, ignoring warnings that their actions did not have Turkish permission and were therefore illegal.

It appears that Turkey intends to take action against international organizations over the incident, which also allegedly violated the “high seas” principle.

According to the German joint command, German sailors boarded a suspicious Turkish merchant ship on Sunday to check the cargo. Soon, Turkey opposed the search and German forces were forced to abandon the mission.
