Thousands of people demonstrated in Santiago de Chile on Friday, demanding the resignation of conservative President Sebastian Pinera amid a resurgence of protests and violent clashes with police, AFP reports.

About 10,000 people, summoned on social networks, gathered on the streets near the government headquarters, protected by a strong police force, to demonstrate on Alameda Boulevard, the main artery of the Chilean capital, writes agerpres.ro.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse groups of men who wore masks, threw stones and set fire to bus stations.

Dozens of protesters who inhaled the chemicals vomited and collapsed to the ground, AFP reporters said.

“The whole of Chile will continue to take to the streets until the resignation of the president, until he resigns. Chile will continue to mobilize, not only in Santiago, but throughout the country,” said Andrea Molina, a protester in 36 years.

The demonstration comes after several days of clashes between demonstrators and police, as well as after the women’s march held on Wednesday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
