Embassies close to the Holy See have announced that the liturgies will take place “in a private setting, without the presence of members of the diplomatic corps” and will be broadcast online, the Catholic news agency reported Monday, according to the Dpa. quoted by Agerpres.
The German representative said the Vatican had sent such a message about the Christmas season, but the Holy See’s press office did not respond to a request for comment.
On December 24, the Supreme Pontiff officiated the Christmas Eve liturgy in St. Peter’s Basilica, in the presence of diplomats accredited by the Vatican and other guests.
On the Vatican website there is no reference to the December service in the agenda of Pope Francis, but the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” blessing of December 25 is confirmed.
“Urbi et Orbi” is usually held from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Vatican has already had to cancel public participation in April Easter ceremonies, a move unprecedented in modern times.
