USA: Trump fights against election results

Donald Trump wanted to invalidate millions of votes. But the US president has suffered setbacks in several states. A Republican now speaks of a “banana republic”.

Current US President Donald Trump has suffered further setbacks in his fight against the election results. Two courts have dismissed lawsuits brought by him and his Republican allies. His Michigan state party mates also fired him. Trump is now hoping for the Supreme Court and another recount of the votes in the state of Georgia.

In the US state of Pennsylvania, Trump may have wanted to invalidate millions of postal votes. He also wanted to stop certifying the final results. Both of these were dismissed by a federal court on Saturday with armed bases: Trump’s lawyers had filed only “worthless legal arguments tried” and speculative charges without evidence, Judge Matthew Brann wrote in his decision. The arguments of Trump’s lawyers would not even have been enough to invalidate the “one voter” vote, the judge wrote. “Our people, our laws and institutions are asking for more.”

“Biden won the election”

A Republican Senator from Pennsylvania, Pat Toomey, said the president has now exhausted all “plausible” lawsuits to challenge the outcome. Faced with more legal losses, it is now clear that his Democratic challenger Joe Biden has won the election. Toomey has thus joined a handful of Republican senators who have already admitted Trump’s defeat.

Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis said, however, that dismissing the case in Pennsylvania would allow them to go to the Washington Supreme Court more quickly. Of the nine judges present, six are considered conservative, three of them nominated by Trump. However, experts believe it very unlikely that Trump’s lawyers will be successful there with their far-reaching and poorly motivated lawsuits.

Trump has no proof

In Pennsylvania, Biden had prevailed by a good margin over Trump and thus secured the state’s 20 voters. The US media counts Biden as 306 voters, significantly more than the majority of the 270 votes needed for victory. Trump still refuses to admit defeat, claiming there was election fraud in the November 3 election. However, as he has not provided any conclusive evidence, the judges have already dismissed many of his claims. According to the CNN news channel, Trump and the Republicans lost about 30 trials.

Maryland Republican Governor Larry Hogan described Trump’s fight against the election results as increasingly “bizarre” and embarrassing. The United States was once a respected leader in free elections around the world, “and now we’re starting to look like a banana republic,” Hogan said in an interview with CNN news channel on Sunday. “It is time to stop the nonsense,” said Hogan, who has repeatedly criticized Trump in the past.

“A huge number of false votes?”

In the state of Georgia, Trump demanded another vote recount on Saturday, as announced by his election team. He was able to do this because the gap between the candidates is less than 0.5 percentage points. Trump’s lawyers said they wanted “honest vote counting” that included signature comparisons and other important guarantees. Trump tweeted Sunday: “We will find a huge number of fake votes.”

Georgia had already checked the ballots herself. Thereafter, Biden’s lead over Trump narrowed from around 14,000 to 12,670 votes, certified results showed. Biden won the votes of 16 voters in Georgia.

Judge Steven Grimberg in Georgia on Friday dismissed the lawsuit of a conservative lawyer who sought to stop legalizing the election result. The court also dismissed an attack by the applicant for the returned mail order votes. Granting the injunction requested by the plaintiff “would create confusion, undermine public confidence in the elections and potentially expel more than one million Georgia voters,” he said.

Republicans criticize Trump’s course

Trump was also unlucky with another strategy: Republican lawmakers and Michigan state senators he invited to the White House spoke out against attempts to alter election results with legal gimmicks after the meeting. Republicans said Friday they had no information that could change the election outcome. Joe Biden will rule the White House from January 20, 2021: Trump continues to block the orderly transition. Therefore, “they would follow the law and the normal process” in appointing voters, said Senate and Pennsylvania House of Representatives majority leaders Mike Shirkey and Lee Chatfield. “And the candidates who get the most votes win the elections and the votes of the electorate.” Biden had won in Michigan by a clear margin.

The unusual meeting with Republicans that Trump had planned had fueled fears that it would push them to change the outcome of the normally more formal authentication stages. However, US media quoted lawyers who pointed out that such a move would never rise in court, even with the consent of local Republicans. Joe Biden is expected to be sworn in as the new president on January 20.
