For many, zoom meetings have become indispensable after the corona pandemic. In times of home office and strict distance regulations, such video conferencing has become an integral part.
The pitfalls of the tool are now also known. There is hardly any meeting where an attendee doesn’t forget to turn on the microphone or has not turned on their computer camera properly.
Micro off, camera on
A similar thing has now happened to Frances Cogelja. As a member of the New Jersey (USA) school board, Cogelja attended a Zoom meeting with approximately 150 people on Monday evening (local time).
What initially works without problems becomes extremely unpleasant for Cogelja.
While the zoom discussion is still ongoing, Cogelja grabs her laptop and goes to the bathroom with it. Other meeting attendees can or should watch it all the time. Because Cogelja turned off the microphone, but not the laptop camera.
Criticized for months
The embarrassing incident has now spread to social networks. And not without consequences: in the meantime, Cogelja has left his post with the school authorities and resigned.
Cogelja’s resignation had been requested for months. But the reason was different: After New Jersey schools decided in summer 2019 to include the LGBTQ community’s struggle for more rights in history lessons, Cogelja said this decision made her “disgusted and horrified.” For weeks he has received massive criticism for his homophobic attitude.
