On the sidelines of a videoconference with US troops, President Donald Trump answered questions from reporters. A reporter wanted to know if the president would remain in the White House when the Electoral College elected Joe Biden as the new president of the United States. Obviously Trump will leave the White House. And the questioning journalist knows it too, he pushed back. The president reacted slightly indignantly. And maybe he’s right about that.
US reporters have speculated for weeks: What if Trump refuses to leave the White House after losing the election? The incumbent president never specifically threatened him. Trump has just left the matter open. He is not yet willing to concede his electoral defeat.
Trump’s explanation for his departure
One consequence has been the wildest speculation about how things could have turned out in Washington. So-called experts were quoted in newspapers and on television as suspecting the military had been deployed. Above all, they provided new ammunition to critics of US journalism.
Precisely because the whole situation has never been there, it is worth waiting and taking a closer look. It becomes clear that President Trump will not admit defeat. Instead, he appears to be working on an “alternative” explanation for his imminent departure: “It depends on whether I can get the government apparatus to work, because time is not on our side. Facts are on ours. It was a great fraud. We are like a third world country. “
But Trump Republicans aren’t even able to uncover evidence of election fraud right now. The next step in the legal saga is a hearing before a judge in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There Biden is ahead with over 80,000 votes. Across the country, there are now 80 million Americans who voted for the Democrat.
Yet Trump claims, “This is not a candidate who can garner 80 million votes, this is not a candidate who gets more votes from Obama’s black voters.” And to set a new point of view, Trump calls the former US president by his full name Barack Hussein Obama, with the aim of attacking the legitimacy of the first black US president.
How much space should the drama still have?
It will go on like this. Journalists in Washington and around the world must consider every day how much extra space they can give to acting. Because at the same time, things are proceeding as planned: President-elect Biden introduced the members of his future cabinet on Tuesday. Since the beginning of the week, the competent federal authority has also paved the way for an orderly handover of official business. Since Biden won 306 voters in the election, Trump only received 232 and therefore has to leave after a term.
