It was during a helicopter trip over the red desert landscape of Utah, United States, that a team from the Wildlife Resources Division discovered a monolith in the middle of nowhere on Wednesday. Its origin is unknown, but there are already several theories emerging on social networks, between extraterrestrial life and the fanatics of the film “2001: A Space Odyssey”.
The strange shiny metal structure, 3 to 3.6 meters high and nestled between the reddish rocks, attracted the attention of the biologist who was on board and was part of the team of officials who wandered around with the aim of accounting wild sheep population in the region. The pilot stepped back at his request, flew back to that area, and set up the apparatus for the crew to see the monolith up close.
Disbelieving what they saw, they couldn’t resist playing with the situation, pilot Bret Hutchings recalled, speaking to local television station KSLTV. “It was the weirdest thing my eyes found in so many years of flying,” he said.
Since there is still no information on the origin of the mysterious object, the most unusual theories were not long in coming. For the helicopter pilot, the work will have been placed there by “some new wave artist” or a big fan of “2001: Space Odyssey”, by Stanley Kubrick, because in the film imposing monoliths, created by an alien species.
The Utah Department of Public Safety posted pictures of the metal monolith and asked on social media what was behind it. The answers were not long in coming. There were those who jokingly suggested that it was a sign of the presence of extraterrestrials, but also those who considered it only an art installation.
The exact location of the monolith has not been revealed by the authorities, to prevent adventurous amateurs from traveling to that region and getting lost in its mountains.
