“Unbearable images”
Paris police suspended after the attack
A black man is said not to have put on a mask and attached it. There are three registered French police officers. Video recordings show a completely different picture. The outrage over the case of police violence in France is great, not least because the publication of such recordings could soon become a crime.
For the second time in a week, images of police violence in France are causing outrage: the Paris prosecutor’s office is opening an investigation into police officers who hit and kicked a black man for not he wore a protective mask. The three officers were suspended. The French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin had asked the prefect of the Paris police Didier Lallement, already under pressure due to a brutal police action against refugees. The interior minister is also considered ill.
The head of the national police, Frédéric Veaux, temporarily fired the three police officers, according to investigators. The prosecutor accuses them of violence at work and false statements. Video from a surveillance camera shows how the three cops crowd a black music producer into his Paris studio and beat him there with blows, kicks and blows.
In a written protocol, the police noted that they had warned the man named “Michel” on the street because he was not wearing a mask as is currently required. “When we tried to hold him back, he forcibly dragged us into the building,” the protocol said. He also mentions the man’s beating against the police. However, this cannot be seen in the study’s surveillance video, which the Internet platform “Loopsider” has published in full.

The recording also shows other men rushing to the producer’s aid and pushing the police out of the studio. The agents then throw a tear gas grenade through the door and shoot down “Michel” with the weapons drawn, as shown by the residents’ cell phone videos.
Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire spoke of “unbearable images” on Twitter. Opposition politicians in the French parliament have harshly criticized Interior Minister Darmanin and again demanded that he withdraw a “global security” law that would criminalize the distribution of such tapes by police officers.
Darmanin was “shocked” only on Tuesday by images showing the brutal evacuation by police of a Parisian refugee camp. On the same day, the National Assembly adopted its “Security Law” at first reading.
With the film ban, Darmanin claims to protect the police, who are complaining of personal attacks after a large number of similar tapes. Media representatives face up to one year in prison and a € 45,000 fine for violations. Journalists have been protesting against the law for weeks.

Due to the incidents, the prefect of the Paris police Lallement could be fired. Before the new videos became known, Interior Minister Darmanin had expressed his “confidence” in him. The interior minister, who is only 38, is himself under pressure: the conservative daily “Le Figaro” reported, citing those surrounding President Emmanuel Macron, that Darmanin was “becoming a problem” due to the ban on cinema. Despite an ongoing investigation into the alleged rape of a former prostitute, surprisingly he took office in July.
In online networks, many users have asked for the resignation of the minister. Many also shared a photo of the black music producer and his beaten face. “If it weren’t for the videos, my client could be in jail,” his lawyer said.
A conversation with French Prime Minister Jean Castex on the ban on cinema was canceled today by media representatives after the prefecture banned a “March of liberties” scheduled for Saturday in Paris for security reasons. Castex was “stunned” by the reaction of the reporters.
