UN: Yemen is in imminent danger of facing the worst famine in the world in decades

Guterres’s warning comes amid a warning from the United States that it will blacklist the Houthi group in Yemen, which is allied with Iran, as part of a “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.

Aid personnel warned that such a move by the United States could prevent aid from arriving in Yemen.

“I urge all those with influence to act urgently on these issues to prevent a catastrophe, and I urge everyone to avoid taking measures that could worsen an already serious situation,” Guterres said in a statement.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, supporting government forces fighting the Houthi group.

UN officials are trying to revive peace talks to end the war as the country goes through an economic and monetary crisis exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Without immediate action, millions of lives could be lost,” Guterres warned.

According to the United Nations, the worst humanitarian crisis in the world is occurring in Yemen, with 80% of people in need of help.

UN Aid Director Mark Lowcock said the organization has received less than half of its $ 1.5 billion in funding this year for humanitarian operations in Yemen. Last year, $ 3 billion was allocated.
