Two gunmen were arrested Thursday near the Philadelphia Convention Center in Pennsylvania, where the counting of votes that could decide the presidential election is taking place, local police said today.
The inmates, aged 42 to 61, traveled from Virginia Beach, Virginia to that location in a Hummer vehicle and without a weapons license in Pennsylvania, officials added.
According to AP reports, the two men were arrested after the FBI in Virginia warned the Philadelphia police about the inmates’ plans.
Police officers stopped the men on the street one block from their vehicle, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw explained.
The 61-year-old man was in possession of a 9mm “Beretta” pistol and the 42-year-old man had a .40 “Beretta”, he added.
Inside the vehicle was found a machine gun without a serial number and ammunition.
A woman accompanying the two men was not arrested, Attorney General Larry Krasner said.
These arrests attract attention at a time when tensions are mounting in the US presidential election, but authorities have warned against over-reading the situation.
There is no evidence of further involvement in this case or that the men belong to an extremist group, and the reason for their trip to Philadelphia has not been disclosed.
US media projections attribute Biden’s 264 votes to “big voters” to Biden and 214 to Trump.
The candidate who has collected at least 270 votes in the Electoral College will be declared the winner.
