The driver of the car has already been arrested, the news was confirmed by the German authorities on the official Twitter account.
Access to the city center has been cut and helicopters are flying over the area. The police demand that photos or videos not be shared on social media.
According to a witness quoted by the local Trierischer Volksfreund, the vehicle would have been a gray Range Rover following at high speed.
Trier is located about 200 kilometers west of Frankfurt, near the Luxembourg border.
