Turkey is inventing its own variant of the Covid vaccine, which it called Erucov-Vac. Turkish specialists hope to be ready “by April”, President Recep Erdogan announced. The vaccine was developed by the Erciyes University in Turkey and could be “made available to all of humanity”.
The announcement of the Turkish vaccine was made by Erdogan, who says medical and scientific specialists are already at an advanced stage of developing the cure for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
“We have reached an important phase of our vaccine. President Erdogan recalled that in his message last weekend, at the G20 summit, he insisted on the fact studies for the development of vaccines against COVID-19 “it should not be sacrificed for political and commercial ambitions, but it should be a heritage of all humanity”.
Studies are underway in several laboratories in Turkey to develop an anti-COVID-19 vaccine, but only the Erciyes University of Kayseri has reached the trial phase on human patients.
The first doses of that Turkish vaccine, called Erucov-Vac, were injected on November 5 to a group of 44 volunteers and local authorities expect this first phase of testing to end in January next year.
Meanwhile, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced that Turkey had signed a contract to purchase 10 million doses of the vaccine from Chinese company Sinovac. He added that the Chinese vaccine will be distributed, in the short term and free of charge, to people in at-risk categories.
