Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preparing to review the country’s foreign policy and improve relations with the administration of the new US president, Joe Biden. According to the agency, Turkey fears the introduction of European sanctions against it due to its behavior in the Mediterranean. The European Union has already adopted a resolution on this, notes the publication DefenseRomania.ro.
Another reason for the rapprochement with the United States is the “growing disagreement” between Ankara and Moscow, between divergent interests in Syria and Libya. Furthermore, according to the agency, relations between the countries are deteriorating due to the Turkish invasion “at the Russian court in the Caucasus” in the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Erdogan expects Biden to help Turkey improve relations with NATO partners. Furthermore, the Turkish president hopes that improving ties with the new US administration will increase Ankara’s chances of acquiring advanced US weapons, blocked by the previous administration led by Donald Trump.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had said that Ankara expected a “new page” in relations with the United States following the inauguration of US President Joe Biden.
