Trump and Fox News have been a perfect relationship for a long time: The US president and the conservative TV station swap meaning, praise and attack each other, until Fox News acknowledges Biden’s election victory. Trump is outraged, but he may already be planning a counterattack.
It wasn’t the first time Donald Trump had criticized his favorite channel, Fox News. But on Thursday he dealt a blow against the conservative channel on Twitter, which heralded the end of arguably the most powerful alliance between the White House and a medium in recent US history. “Ratings have completely plummeted. Murdoch – who also owns a number of other Fox broadcasters as well as the “Wall Street Journal” and “New York Post” newspapers – is said to not particularly like him personally, as many observers of the scene have described. But he saw in Trump a historic opportunity to expand his power at the heart of the White House.
TV presenter as one of the most important advisers
The plan worked and Fox News became more than just a news channel. It gave Trump’s falsehoods more space than other major channels. The evening’s opinion broadcasts were filled with Trump-friendly moderators. Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham refer to Trump as his “friends” – each day they offer a giveaway program reminiscent of government propaganda. In his book “Hoax,” Brian Stelter, a media reporter for CNN – who reports extremely critical of the president – describes the multiple links between the Trump administration and Fox News. The channel is a “propaganda machine like the United States has never seen before,” Stelter said.
And an echo chamber: Trump drew ideas for his politics from the programs, which then reported on his politics with praise. According to a May 2019 poll, Trump enjoyed a significantly higher level of approval for his work among Fox News consumers than viewers of other broadcasters. Stelter portrays Sean Hannity as one of Trump’s most important advisors during his presidency. It is said to have influenced decisions relating to personnel and management. Hannity is not the only one in the president’s ears: Trump reportedly canceled a planned attack on Iran that could have led to war, including because of Tucker Carlson. This had previously advertised moderation in its broadcast.
Behind the scenes of Fox News, two camps face off: public opinion employees and journalists like Chris Wallace, who also hosted the first televised duel between Trump and Biden. According to Stelter, the latter were increasingly frustrated during the presidency by the list the broadcaster had received from commentators. The US election was the time for independent journalists and data analysts for the channel. On election night, the station proclaimed the “Swing State” Arizona for Biden in advance. According to the “New York Times” a shock for the Trump team. President Jared Kushner’s son-in-law called Murdoch and tried to persuade the station to retreat, in vain. When Biden got the necessary 270 votes from the constituency, the broadcaster called Biden the “elected president.”
“Trump is like Fox’s Frankenstein”
Fox News reporter Eric Shawn drew attention when he said of an allegation by the Trump team of alleged electoral irregularities: “That’s not true. It’s not true. It’s just not true.” And moderator Neil Cavuto passed by a press conference with a Trump spokesperson on the same topic after a few moments. His reasoning: “If he has no more details to prove it, I cannot show it to you with a clear conscience”.
This has annoyed not only Trump but also some of his supporters, who are now accusing Fox of betraying the president and want to switch to smaller TV channels like OANN (One America News Network) or Newsmax. These regularly distort the truth beyond recognition. Newsmax ratings have increased many times over the past few days. Trump said he personally congratulated Newsmax boss Christopher Ruddy in a call from the Oval Office.
Trump had repeatedly threatened that mainstream media reporting negative news about him would suffer bitterly after his departure – in fact, US media like Fox News or the “New York Times” won over subscribers and viewers because of Trump. According to the Guardian, however, there is no evidence that their shares are now decreasing as Trump claims.
In the political struggle for survival, the outgoing president may now turn his back on his favorite place. But what happens next? “Trump wants control,” reporter Stelter quotes an informant in his book, published just before the election. “He wants Trump TV”. His media empire. Trump could therefore soon compete for public favor as Murdoch’s opponent, with many hours of broadcasting just for his worldview, straight from his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida – possibly with performances for his children Ivanka, Eric and Don Junior. “Trump is like Fox’s Frankenstein,” Stelter quotes another source. “You helped create it, and it’s out of control.”
