Theofilos Kantzoglu, head of the directorate of veterinary services in Kozana, explained that all the samples taken from the 8 live and dead mink in the Kaloneri herd tested positive when the coronavirus was found in workers working on farms in the region.
Stating that there has recently been an increase in the death rate in minkes and that Kovid-19 symptoms such as weakness, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing have been observed in many minkes, Kantzoglu said it was decided to destroy 2,500 minks as a precaution.
Kantzoglu said intense tests were also carried out on workers and mink working on about 90 mink farms in the Kozana and Kesriye (Kastoria) regions.
An investigation was initiated by national public health officials after Kovid-19 was found in 10 workers working on the Voyu Municipality-affiliated farm the previous day in the Kastoria region and cases of intense death in mink were observed.
There are estimated to be around 1 million mink on Kastoria and Kozana farms.
