Thousands of people rush to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro
The pandemic and municipal elections weren’t enough to keep Brazilians off the beach.
Crowds filled the beaches
Beach, sun and temperatures around 36ºC in Rio de Janeiro. This scenario would be perfect if Brazil were not experiencing, like the rest of the world, a pandemic caused by Covid-19. But the truth is that this was not enough to keep Brazilians away from the main beaches of this city on Sunday 29 November.
The beaches of Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema were filled with thousands of people, which even caused huge traffic queues on the main access roads. And all this on the day the municipal elections were held in Rio de Janeiro.
Although the easing of measures to combat Covid-19 has already begun in Brazil and it is allowed to stay on the beach, there shouldn’t have been such a large concentration of people, especially without the recommended social distance and protective masks.
Official figures this Sunday include 22 deaths and 556 cases of Covid-19 in the state of Rio de Janeiro alone.
