The shock wave killed him and wounded an accomplice, who was captured. Three other band members fled. It happened in Uruguay.
The event that occurred in a mall in Montevideo joins dozens of similar events in Uruguay.
The Ministry of the Interior reported the episode with images in which there is plenty of blood on the floor, following the wounds left by the explosion in two of the five criminals.
Another of the assailants was seriously injured and was hospitalized and detained, while the other three thieves – all with balaclava, heavily armed and wearing bulletproof vests – managed to escape.
"Two of the five criminals were hit by the induced shock wave, causing multiple injuries to one of them and another's death," the authorities said in a press release.
The detonation destroyed the facilities of a foreign exchange house that housed the cash dispenser, in a residential neighborhood near the Río de la Plata.
It is unclear whether the detonation occurred due to the use of explosives by thieves to access the tickets or if there was some kind of failure.
Another attempt of similar robbery occurred in the department (province) of Canelones, on the border with Montevideo, adding a series of dozens of robberies by means of explosions to the ATMs in Uruguay.
The wave of robberies to distributors of money has led the authorities to adopt exceptional measures for the use of these devices.
In Uruguay, a country that has approved laws that encourage the use of cards for the payment of goods and services, as well as the banking activity of financial transactions, it is no longer possible to resort to ATMs at night, between 22:00 and 10:00. 0600 rooms, as a security measure against this type of robbery.
In addition, the authorities ordered the "inking" of banknotes into many ATMs, a mechanism that marks the paper money and makes it impossible for thieves to use it without leaving traces.
The country is going through a phase of increasing violence, which last year was evident in a record number of murders
