City mayor Dennis McBride did not confirm the number of injuries in the shooting, but said in a statement that no one is in a situation where their lives are in danger.
McBride said about 75 police officers from several nearby towns arrived at Mayfair Mall, where the incident took place, but the suspect was not arrested.
“It will take some time to provide additional and possibly more accurate information, but the information will be released as it becomes available,” the mayor said in his statement.
The Milwaukee Division of the Federal Police (FBI), on the outskirts of which Wauwatosa is located, is also cooperating in the investigation.
According to witnesses cited by local media, eight to twelve shots were heard during the shooting and, after the rescue teams arrived, about five people were carried on a stretcher from the mall.
The Mayfair Mall was the scene of a shooting last February in which a Wauwatosa agent, Joseph Mensah, shot and killed 17-year-old black Alvin Cole while allegedly fleeing the police.
Because of that incident, the mall was subject to sporadic protests for several months.
Mensah, also black and who said he shot the young man because he aimed a gun at him, was not prosecuted, but following the incident, he recently reached an agreement with the city that he will leave the police in exchange for compensation of $ 130,000.
