A young man who “liked” a Twitter photo showing Professor Samuel Paty after his beheading has been accused of glorifying terrorism, the French government said.
Paty was attacked and killed in the street for showing her students the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in a lecture on freedom of expression.
I can see:
His killer, an 18-year-old Chechen refugee living in France
Since he was a child he was shot and killed by the police. Before his death, he posted a photo of the teacher’s severed head on Twitter.
The 22-year-old who liked the publication is also of Chechen descent, said prosecutor Frederic Chevallier of the central city of Blois, where he lives.
He was already on the radar of the authorities for endorsing a massacre in the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo which first published the cartoons of Mohammed.
The man denied being radicalized, Chevallier added.
From murder of Paty, October 16
, the French authorities have repressed radical Islam.
In the context:
Police carried out dozens of raids on individuals and organizations suspected of supporting or inciting extremism.
Many Muslims regard representations of the Prophet Muhammad as sacrilegious.
But in France, which has a long tradition of satire on religion, they are seen as a symbol of freedom of expression.
