We have high hopes for travel in 2021. There is no doubt that we are eager to get out and explore again – the only question is: where first? Luckily, the end of the year usually means all sorts of ‘where to travel’ lists start appearing, and perhaps surprisingly, 2020 is no exception either.
The latest comes from National Geographic Traveler, which has just released its annual list of the “best in the world”. This year, they have broken down their list of 25 “destinations on the rise” into five themes: sustainability, family, nature, adventure and culture. The magazine states that each of its picks is meant to serve as inspiration for future travel, whenever possible.
Highlights of the sustainability category include Alonissos in Greece, where an ancient wreck has been converted into an underwater museum, and the French territory of New Caledonia, which now has a 1.3 million square kilometer marine park. In the family section, meanwhile, they recommend the nearly complete England Coastal Path, which will be the longest waterfront walking path in the world.
Adventurers, they say, should reach Dominica’s mountains, beaches, and waterfalls, while culture vultures are advised to explore the native resilience of New Mexico’s Pueblo nations. Nature lovers, on the other hand, might find themselves in the grassy savannahs of Cerrado, Brazil, or the “last paradise” of the Australian island of Lord Howe, where only a select number of visitors are allowed at any one time.
