The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, on Thursday 12 November defined the US electoral system as one of the most “archaic” in the world, after the victory of Joe Biden, rejected by Donald Trump.

“They probably have the most archaic electoral system that exists compared to other large countries in the world,” Lavrov said at a press conference.

The Russian foreign minister criticized above all the indirect nature of the election of the president, chosen by the great electors appointed by universal suffrage.

According to this system, the winner is not the one who gets the most votes at the national level, but the one who wins the electoral college, made up of 270 representatives of all states (large voters).

“If Americans are willing to live by this tradition that greatly deforms the will of the people … let them do it,” Lavrov launched.

Like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov indicated that Moscow will only congratulate the winner of the elections after the official results are published.

“Congratulations are sent before the results are published when there is no dispute,” the Russian minister said.

Unlike most countries, China and Russia have not congratulated Biden.

Donald Trump refused to acknowledge the Democrat’s victory, announced on Saturday, denouncing, without presenting evidence, fraud in Biden’s favor and promising legal action.

The head of the Russian electoral commission estimated on Monday that mail-order voting in the United States left “huge room” for possible fraud, following Trump’s team rhetoric.
