The United States has once again reached a tragic milestone in the corona pandemic: a quarter of a million people have already succumbed to the virus there. The number of new infections is increasing faster and faster.

The number of deaths from coronavirus infection in the United States has risen to its highest level since the beginning of May. On Wednesday, authorities reported 1,848 deaths within 24 hours, according to data from the University of Johns Hopkins (JHU) in Baltimore on Thursday morning (CET).

The number of new confirmed infections also increased further to 170,161 cases. About 143,000 new cases occurred on the same day the previous week. The highest value to date was recorded on Friday when more than 177,000 new infections were reported.

“Dangerous point” in the pandemic

The United States is at a “dangerous point” in the pandemic, said Admiral Brett Giroir, who is a member of the White House Corona working group, MSNBC. “Right now we are seeing the biggest increase in the number of cases, our hospital admissions are increasing by 25% week after week, our deaths are increasing by 25% week by week – and this is not going in the right direction.”

This is not false alarmism, the health official stressed. The rate of increase in corona cases has not been as severe at any other time in the pandemic. New corona infections per day are at a very high level in the United States. Since the beginning of November, more than 100,000 new infections have been reported every day.

According to the JHU, it wasn’t until Wednesday that the United States surpassed the death toll by a quarter of a million. Since the start of the pandemic, 250,537 people have died from the pathogen Sars-CoV-2, more than in any other country in the world. Most of the deaths have been reported in the states of New York, Texas and California. In total, more than 11.5 million people have been infected with the coronavirus in the country with approximately 330 million inhabitants.

Criticism of Donald Trump’s handling of the crown crisis

The JHU website is updated regularly and therefore usually shows a higher level than official data from the US health authority CDC. In some cases, the university’s figures were later corrected. The CDC said the death toll on Wednesday evening (local time) was around 248,000. The pathogen Sars-CoV-2 can trigger Covid-19 disease, which can be life-threatening, especially for the elderly or immunocompromised.

Critics accuse incumbent US President Donald Trump of gross negligence in the pandemic. More recently, Trump commented mainly on the progress made in vaccine development, but not the dramatic increase in the number of cases. President-elect Joe Biden has called for immediate action from the Trump administration. He wants to make fighting the pandemic a priority once he moves to the White House. The inauguration is scheduled for January 20.
