The UK became the first country in the world to approve the widespread use of the COVID vaccine developed by Pfizer / BioNTech.

The UK regulator MHRA says the vaccine, which offers up to 95% protection against COVID-19, is safe and vaccinations could begin in a few days for people in high priority groups, Mediafax reports.

Britain has already ordered 40 million doses, enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

Around 10 million doses are expected to be available shortly, with the first units arriving in the UK in the coming days.

This is the vaccine that has gone the fastest from concept to reality, taking only 10 months to follow the same stages of development that normally take a decade.

Although vaccination can begin, people must remain vigilant and follow the rules to stop the spread, experts say.

On Tuesday, the European Medicines Agency announced that the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech will receive the green light for sale no later than 29 December.
