The 28-year-old woman who committed a possible terrorist attack in a shop in Lugano, Switzerland, was known as a jihadist and suffered from love. The young woman of Swiss origin allegedly met an ISIS militant from Syria online, whom she tried in vain to meet.

The young woman grabbed a woman by the neck and stabbed another with a knife on Tuesday in a shop in Lugano, canton Ticino. National police chief Nicoletta della Valle said there were suspicions of a possible terrorist attack. One of the victims had fairly serious but not fatal injuries and the other was slightly injured.

The Swiss Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had opened an investigation into an “attack suspected of having terrorist motives”. The woman was included in the police databases as a supporter of the terrorist group of the Islamic State.

The attack took place around 14:00 local time, near a cash register, in a large shop in Lugano.

“The attacker is known to Fedpol for having a jihadist past since police investigations conducted in 2017,” the Swiss Federal Police Office said.

The young woman allegedly had a relationship through social networks with a Syrian jihadist fighter and tried to meet him, but the Turkish authorities sent her back from the border. According to federal officials, he suffered from mental health problems.

“The woman was suffering from mental health problems at the time. After returning to Switzerland, she was admitted to a psychiatric clinic,” the police said.

Furthermore, witnesses said the young woman screamed during the attack that was part of the Islamic State group. The suspect was subsequently arrested. The federal prosecutor’s office described the incident as a possible terrorist attack and took over the investigation in this case.
