The government extended isolation on Thursday – until December 7 – initially scheduled to last until November 30, due to the high number of patients infected with the new coronavirus and the strong pressure on hospitals, News.ro informs.
Dozens of motorcyclists and employees of the Ministry of Labor demonstrated briefly in front of the ministry headquarters in central Athens, waving red and black flags, according to images broadcast on social networks.
The hospital employees’ union has called a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Health, asking for a “Christmas bonus for all staff” and “reinforcement of protective measures”.
About 200 leftist movements marched 500 meters in the center of the capital, after which the police asked them to disperse, according to an AFP journalist.
In Athens, the metro did not run for 14 hours on Thursday, and bus and tram drivers had to stop work on Thursday evening.
No maritime connection between the mainland and the islands was ensured on Thursday, following participation in the strike of the Union of Sailors.
Journalists from public and private media went on strike for two hours on Thursday before noon to protest “any (government) intervention in the midst of the pandemic that undermines social security rights and workers’ freedoms”.
Journalists’ unions are calling for “more tests to keep employees working” and “strengthening public health services in the fight against the pandemic”.
Significant police forces have been deployed on the streets of Athens to ban the demonstrations, as any assembly has been banned since solitary confinement was imposed on 7 November.
Greece, bypassed by the first wave of the pandemic in the spring, was particularly hit by the autumn and the traditionally scarce Greek health services are coming under severe pressure.
Greece has reported around 100 deaths a day from covid-19 in recent days, a total of 1,902 since February.
The average daily contamination with the new coronavirus amounts to over 2,000 – 97,200 in total.
