Russian police say they have captured the man responsible for 26 crimes committed in recent years, nicknamed “the manga about the Volga”, reports The Guardian.
Investigators say the suspect, a 38-year-old man named Radik Tagirov, confessed to killing 26 women between the ages of 2011 and 2012. He was identified based on DNA evidence, shoe prints and other evidence. . at the crime scene, investigators said.
Tagirov headed for the apartments of elderly women who lived alone, posing as electricians or plumbers.
Once inside, he strangled his victims with his hands or using objects he found nearby, including an apron and a rope. The vast majority of his victims were over 70 years old.
Tagirov often robbed his victims, but in some cases he left valuables intact. He wore gloves and cleaned himself at the crime scene so as not to be found by the police.
The killings, which took place mainly between 2011 and 2012, occurred in several Russian cities, including Kazan, Samara, Toliatti, Izhevsk and Ufa. He is also suspected of committing other crimes in the Urals, although the exact number of his victims has never been established.
The serial killer appeared to have stopped killing women after 2013, but a new wave of crime in the region in 2017 brought the fears back to the public.
In 2019, the police offered a reward of over € 33,000 for the information that led to the arrest of the “Volga maniac”.
