France reported a toll of 551 deaths related to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours on Monday, a black record for the second wave of the outbreak, health director general Jerome Salomon said.
“The peak of the epidemic is ahead of us, the second wave is still advancing,” Solomon warned, noting “slower progress” of the epidemic “wherever anticipated curbing measures have been applied, particularly travel restrictions.”
Most of the deaths (613) recorded in hospitals within 24 hours of the first outbreak were reported on 6 April.
The director general also announced that 1,807,479 cases of coronavirus infection have been detected since the outbreak in France.
Currently the number of patients admitted with COVID-19 is 31,125, of which 4,690 are in intensive care units, 163 more than a day ago.
The total number of deaths in France since the start of the epidemic has reached 40,987.
