Certain types of mouthwashes have been shown to be effective against SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes covid-19, according to a study from Cardiff University in the UK. The authors have found “promising signs” in vitro and hope that the results of clinical studies will prove them.
According to scientists from this University of Wales, mouthwashes with at least 0.07% CPC (cetylpyridinium chloride) can even help wipe out the novel coronavirus in just 30 seconds.
However, the researchers point out that the use can help kill the virus in saliva, but so far there is no scientific evidence that it can be used to treat covid-19, as it doesn’t reach the airways or lungs.
The results, however, are positive and increase the likelihood of including mouthwashes as part of covid-19 prevention routines “in combination with hand washing, physical distance and mask use, both now and in the future.” Despite this, it is not known how long the effects may last.
