The man who set fire to his Venezuelan wife in prison

The woman, a 22-year-old Venezuelan, suffered second-degree burns between 10 and 19 percent of her body and received a 25-day disability.

At the request of the Colombian Attorney General’s office, the 32nd Medellín Municipal Criminal Court imposed an intramural security measure against Jeisson de Jesús de la Cruz Sandoval, allegedly responsible for aggravated intra-family violence.

The investigated events occurred in the Manrique neighborhood of Medellín on 24 November, when the accused today sprayed alcohol and set fire to his partner Michell Yurimari Gelvez Rojas.

After the attack, the perpetrator himself took the victim to a health center.

The 22-year-old woman – according to the press is Venezuelan – suffered second-degree burns between 10 and 19 percent of her body and received a 25-day disability.

De la Cruz Sandoval appeared before the Prosecutor’s Office on the same day as the events, but was not arrested on that occasion because there was not enough material evidence to count the charges nor was there flagrant delicto.

The 26-year-old defendant was arrested by court order and did not accept the charges made by a prosecutor from the Immediate Reaction Unit.

The investigation was conducted under the guidelines of that nation’s attorney general, Francisco Barbosa Delgado, to prioritize cases where women are victims of gender-based violence.
