He was found by a woman who took the dog for a walk and asked for help, being immediately recognized.
The woman accompanied her to a nearby house to call the authorities: "It's Jayme Closs, call 911!" was the phrase that many have decided to highlight to report the girl's appearance. Minutes after the police were alerted, the suspect was arrested. He appeared in a Wisconsin court on Monday afternoon on charges of kidnapping and double murder.
Jake Thomas Patterson confessed to having seen the Closs family near Barron to kidnap Jayme. However, he hesitated twice because there were too many people in the neighborhood.
The authorities said that the man entered the main door of the house and that the 13-year-old and her mother were hiding in the bathroom after hearing the gunshot that killed James Closs, Jayme's father.
Then Jake Patterson broke the bathroom door and forced Denise Closs, Jayme's mother, to tie her hands and ankles with tape. Then he shot Denise and dragged Jayme into the trunk of the car, taking her to a hut near the town of Gordon, about 100 miles away. The complaint says that the girl was up to 12 hours without food or water.
For months, thousands of people have participated in research groups. The FBI offered a cash reward for information on where the girl was, and the authorities asked the hunters in the area to look for clues.
In a statement released last Thursday, the Wisconsin police thanked everyone who helped the child stay safe: "We promise to take Jayme home, and we'll keep that promise tonight."
