The head of the International Monetary Fund on Sunday called for the swift and effective implementation of a new G20 framework set up to help the world’s poorest countries achieve permanent debt relief, but said other countries need help too.

“It is imperative to get this framework up and running promptly and effectively,” IMF Chief Executive Kristalina Georgieva said in a statement after addressing the Group’s leaders of the top 20 economies. “Moving forward, we also need to help countries not covered by the Framework address debt vulnerability so that their economies can become more resilient.”

The debt treatment framework approved by G20 leaders on Sunday applies to 73 countries that are eligible for a temporary freeze on official bilateral debt payments.
