The hole in the ozone layer is undergoing normalization, said a team of New Zealand scientists studying the atmosphere over Antarctic, quoted by the Xinhua agency.
The information comes from a small laboratory for the observations of Scott Base, the outpost of New Zealand on the icy continent in the last 30 years, writes agerpres.ro.

In the remote research center several studies and researches were carried out in the field of the atmosphere dedicated to the hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic.
Ozone absorbs the ultraviolet light emitted by the Sun, protecting people, plants and animals from radiation that can cause burns and cancer.

Richard Querel, of Otago, used the information obtained from the center to evaluate the evolution of the hole in the ozone layer. According to its results, the data show that over time the ozone hole is gradually decreasing due to the international ban on chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), substances widely used in the past by producers of refrigerators known to destroy the ozone layer.
According to a UN study published in November, the ozone layer that protects terrestrial life from cancerous solar radiation is recovering at a rate of between 1% and 3% per decade, reversing a dangerous trend, manifested by many years, indicating the gradual exhaustion of this gas from the earth's atmosphere due to the emission of harmful substances. A four-year analysis of the Montreal Protocol, a 1987 ban on industrial gases that destroy the fragile ozone layer at high altitude, has found a long-term decline of ozone-depleting substances and a process of recovery – in full swing – of ozone in the stratosphere.

Experts expect that the ozone hole over Antarctica will gradually cover and reach the 1980 level in the 1980s, according to the document.
The UN has already welcomed the success of the Montreal Protocol, which has banned or phased out ozone-depleting chemicals, including CFCs, but the new report states that it was the first time that the ozone hole above Antarctica had decreased in size and depth after 2000.
