Paris, Nov 5 (Prensa Latina) On Thursday the French Senate unanimously approved a bill that restores the cultural heritage of Senegal and Benin, to rebuild cultural relations with Africa.
The Chamber also introduced in the text the creation of a “National Council to reflect on the issues of circulation and restitution of non-European cultural assets”, managing scientific supervision.

The decision will allow the transfer to Benin about 26 objects from the “Treasury of Behanzin”, taken during the sacking of the Abomey palace in 1892. They are now in the Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac museum in Paris.

A sword and its scabbard attributed to El Hadj Omar Tall, a great 19th-century West African military and religious figure may be returned to Senegal. The two pieces are owned by the Army Museum of Paris and are currently on display in Dakar as a long-term loan.

The Senate initiative must be ratified by the National Assembly (Parliament), albeit with little prospect as the government, which has a majority in this House, is opposed.
