Nevada is the first US state in which same-sex marriage will be enshrined in the Constitution, following a referendum on the US presidential election. According to the results, over 62% of the votes in favor were obtained in this regard.

Gay couples had to wait until the end of 2014 for a decision by the Supreme Court, the highest jurisdiction in the United States, to obtain recognition of their union, only at the federal level, in Nevada and in about thirty other states.
The amendment also requires Nevada and its institutions to recognize and treat all marriages equally, regardless of gender. For supporters of the measure, this is a further guarantee for homosexuals if the Supreme Court, where Conservatives now enjoy a clear majority, overturn its decision.
The referendum, however, establishes the right of religious organizations and members of the Nevada clergy to refuse to officiate same-sex marriages without taking legal action.
