Romania, which assumed the presidency of the EU Council since 1 January, has accelerated its regulatory efforts, which could make the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline more problematic, informs Polandin.com Polish, states Agerpres.
The Russian group Gazprom supplies natural gas to Germany through a series of pipelines located in the Baltic Sea, called Nord Stream. In 2015, Gazprom and a group of European companies, such as E.ON, Wintershall, Shell, OMV and Engie, signed an agreement to implement the Nord Stream 2 project, which envisages the construction of two more pipelines in addition to the existing ones.
Romania wants to revise the EU Gas Directive so that all pipelines in the EU, including offshore, are under European legislation.

These developments could be welcome by Poland, which opposes the construction of Nord Stream 2, mainly because most of the measures that Warsaw would like to see included in the review have been taken into account.
"The extent to which all new pipelines (from the EU's territory) must comply with EU regulations is crucial." The exemption from the regulation of Nord Stream 2, something that Austria has proposed, is not a possibility, "he told a public radio station Polish diplomat in Brussels.
He added that the review could get support from a larger number of EU member states. Until recently, there were 10-11 supporters of the review.
Meanwhile, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria are more worried because they see their interests compromised by the review. As a result, they joined the project because the companies that are part of the consortium designated to build Nord Stream 2 come from these countries and would suffer if the project failed.
Other Member States have not yet expressed their point of view. The Polish diplomat's estimate shows that "a neutral attitude" of Italy, Spain and France could be enough to make it more difficult to complete the construction of Nord Stream 2.
Romania will present proposals for the revised directive on Wednesday, but the final version will depend on the success of the Member States in the negotiations in the European Parliament.

Furthermore, there is time pressure for the revised regulations to be adopted before the completion of the construction scheduled for December 2019. In the context of the May European Parliament elections, the adoption should be completed by April.
However, those who oppose Nord Stream 2 could benefit longer because Denmark has not yet granted Russia permission to build the gas pipeline through Danish territorial waters.
