No more Fucking: the famous village of Fucking in Upper Austria is changing its name. From 1 January the place of about 100 inhabitants will be called, which had to complain about stolen toponymic signs due to the same name with an obscene English term Run away.
Before that, there are still some administrative steps, the mayor of the mother community of Tarsdorf, Andrea Holzner, told the broadcaster “OE24” on Thursday. The decision of the Tarsdorf city council in mid-November was published earlier this week in the official notice board of the municipality in the district of Braunau am Inn.
According to media reports, there have been frequent considerations by the ailing Fuckinger to change their place name in recent years. The village appears on international lists of funny place names and place signs have been stolen over and over again. Conversely, last fall some residents used the attention for symbolic purposes and formed puns with posters with particularly drastic demands around the place name sign. (sda / dpa)
